The dead Internet theory is an online conspiracy theory that asserts that the Internet now consists mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation to intentionally manipulate the population and minimize organic human activity. Proponents of the theory believe these bots were created intentionally to help manipulate algorithms and boost search results in order to manipulate consumers.[5][6] Some proponents of the theory accuse government agencies of using bots to manipulate public perception.[2][5] The date given for this "death" is generally around 2016 or 2017.[2][7][8]

The dead Internet theory has gained traction because many of the observed phenomena are quantifiable, such as increased bot traffic, but the literature does not support the full theory.[2][4][9]Caroline Busta, founder of the media platform New Models, was quoted in an article in The Atlantic calling much of the dead Internet theory a "paranoid fantasy", even if there are legitimate criticisms involving bot traffic and the integrity of the internet, but she said she does agree with the "overarching idea".[2] In an article in The New Atlantis, Robert Mariani called the theory a mix between a genuine conspiracy theory and a creepypasta.[5] The dead Internet theory is sometimes used to refer to the observable increase in content generated via large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPTappearing in popular Internet spaces without mention of the full theory.[1][10]

The dead Internet theory's exact origin is difficult to pinpoint. In 2021, a thread titled "Dead Internet Theory: Most Of The Internet Is Fake" was published on the forum Agora Road's Macintosh Cafe by a user named "IlluminatiPirate", claiming to be building on posts from 4chan's paranormal section and Wizardchan,[2] and marking the term's spread beyond these initial imageboards.[2][11] The theory gained traction in discussions among technology enthusiasts, researchers, and futurists who sought to explore the risks associated with our reliance on the Internet. The conspiracy theory has entered public culture through widespread coverage and has been discussed on various high-profile YouTube channels.[2] It gained more mainstream attention with an article in The Atlantic titled "Maybe You Missed It, but the Internet 'Died' Five Years Ago".[2] This article has been widely cited by other articles on the topic.[12][11]

In recent years,[when?] the term has been used to describe the phenomena of bot-generated content displacing human-generated content without discussion of the full theory.[1][10]

The dead Internet theory has two main components: that bots have displaced human activity on the Internet and that actors are employing these bots to manipulate the human population.[13][14] The first part of this theory, that bots create much of the content on the internet and perhaps contribute more than organic human content, has been a concern for a while, with the original post by "IlluminatiPirate" citing the article "How Much of the Internet Is Fake? Turns Out, a Lot of It, Actually" in New York magazine.[2][15][13] The second half of the dead Internet theory builds on this observable phenomenon by proposing that the U.S. government, corporations, or other actors are intentionally employing these bots to manipulate the human population for a variety of reasons.[2][13][14]In the original post, the idea that bots have displaced human content is described as the "setup", with the "thesis" of the theory itself focusing on the United States government being responsible for this, stating: "The U.S. government is engaging in an artificial intelligence powered gaslighting of the entire world population."[2][5]

Generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) are a class of large language models (LLMs) that employ artificial neural networks to produce human-like content.[16][17] The first of these to be well known was developed by OpenAI.[18] These models have created significant controversy. For example, Timothy Shoup of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies has said, "in the scenario where GPT-3 'gets loose', the internet would be completely unrecognizable".[19] He predicted that in such a scenario, 99% to 99.9% of content online might be AI-generated by 2025 to 2030.[19] These predictions have been used as evidence for the dead internet theory.[12] In 2024, Google reported that its search results were being inundated with websites that "feel like they were created for search engines instead of people."[20] In correspondence with Gizmodo, a Google spokesperson acknowledged the role of generative AI in the rapid proliferation of such content and that it could displace more valuable human-made alternatives.

All of that was Wikipedia’s interpretation. We know this website always posts propaganda and favors the bloodlines. As an expert in databases, algorithms and AI, I can tell you that bots are there. In fact, Elon Musk was quoted that Twitter right after he bought it had 90% bots and they were being used to steer public opinion. According to him, they were all leftist propagandists but after speaking with one of the head programmers of Twitter, he said Elon was lying and ruined the company which he believed in. Regardless if it’s true or not, can bots be used for such evil intentions? 

Absolutely and any corporation that owns the platform that can steer public opinion can easily persuade the public to do what they want. I did a test of TikTok and only 2.5% of my 130,000 followers signed up to my newsletter. I am convinced the majority of my followers were bots. This is why I designed the show bot or not. To help try and expose that the Internet is just a sales tool to sway public opinion and divide and conquer. The dead Internet theory has truth in it but it’s not all true. The reason being I personally have servers that I own in a data center where we do not have any bots associated with. And you can search and find me easily. The theory makes no sense if I or other people that I know work on the Internet thus I would be one of the bots. 

Now that doesn’t mean that the majority of information and computers on the Internet are not bots but if I had to guess based off of my education experience I would say That at least 30% if not more of the people who follow you and share your information and click the like button are actually just computers all designed to steer public opinion and get you to buy something whatever it is or trying to sell. The Internet is not dead. It’s alive and well. Now as far as artificial intelligence is concerned you don’t need 90% of all traffic to be bought to steer public opinion you only need 10% and I believe that 10% of all people online are not real people and I’m being very very very very very conservative on that number but the dead Internet theory is claiming it’s 90 to 100% and I just don’t buy that. 

Another way of looking at this is how many applications are out there? Let’s say a dozen, that everyone uses. All of those applications most certainly have bots that are designed to scam. I know this because my TikTok was full of them and now they’re going on all the other applications scamming people. For some XRP quantum financial system bullshit. It’s all a lie so you can add that percent of the scammers, so conservatively I would say a total of 20% of all the people online that you’re talking to are not even real. The story is half true.
